POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Environmental Manager, this position is based at two structural ceramic production plants located in the Sacramento Region. This position will provide advice on environmental compliance, raw material handling and procurement, mining, and property management.  Ensure that the plants have adequate supplies and reserves of clay and other raw materials.  Will liaise with-and-supervise government inspectors and representatives, contractors, and consultants.  Monitoring and reporting of storm water discharges at multiple locations will be part of your responsibilities; and is responsible for demonstrating and promoting the Core Values of Integrity, Safety, Respect, Customer Focus, Quality, Innovation and Financial Success.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISION: General

  • Responsible for the mining, purchasing and selling of clay and other raw material feedstocks at Gladding McBean’s Lincoln plant and HC Muddox’s Sacramento plant. 
  • Responsible for the development, maintenance, regulatory compliance and reclamation of multiple mines in the regions surrounding Lincoln, Sacramento, and Ione.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory storm water programs at multiple sites.
  • Supervision and coordination of contractors and consultants.
  • Works as a company liaison with government inspectors and representatives.
  • Provides advice and analysis to Plant Management and co-workers.
  • Research, compile, tabulate, and analyze data for a variety of administrative and Company matters.
  • Prepare and present reports; respond to requests for information.
  • Provide operational knowledge of property and environmental control systems, as it pertains to mining and raw material procurement, for troubleshooting activities and ongoing guidance for successful operation to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Assist facilities in complying with company guidelines, and environmental regulations.
  • Ensure that each location has the necessary regulatory agency required programs, that those programs are site specific, and are reviewed and revised as required.
  • Attends safety meetings and abides by all safety rules set forth by the Company and governmental regulatory agencies; ensures that hazardous conditions are reported and corrected.
  • Regular attendance is required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

  • Bachelor of Science (Engineering, Biology, Geology, Earth Science, Chemistry, or equivalent)
  • Must have and maintain valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to apply basic statistical techniques for data analysis.  Possess a good working knowledge of geometry and trigonometry.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and describe 3D resource models and develop mining plans and financial costings.  Demonstrated ability to identify mining and environmental issues affecting plant operations, and as part of a team work to provide solutions and improvements.
  • MSHA Part 46 Certificate or completion of the certificate upon hire
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required; Good presentation skills including written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to operate a PC and various office equipment/technology; Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; Reach with hands and arms, sit; Talk and listen; Stand and walk long distances on Plant sites, climb stairs and ladders and up onto elevated platforms and industrial machinery.
  • Occasionally required to bend at the waist; Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Up to 25% travel time required; Regular attendance is required.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

 

  • Travel by air and car is required to plant locations or mines, where exposure to industrial noise, temperature extremes, chemicals and minerals (e.g. Portland cement, fly ash, sand & gravel, concrete admixtures, and so forth), moving machinery, forklift traffic, etc. is likely.
  • Regular work in an office environment with moderate noise.
  • Regular field work outdoors in all climatic conditions.  This will involve working independently or as part of a team in hot, cold, wet, dusty and/or windy conditions. 
  • Regular climbing and descending of irregular and unconsolidated slopes of up to 35 degrees.
  • Working around, climbing on and operating machinery and equipment in dusty and noisy environments.
  • Regular work in and around large and small bodies of water.
  • Occasional work upon and around crushers, screens, conveyor belts, storage bins and silos.  This will require climbing and descending ladders and walking along elevated walkways and platforms.
