POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Superintendent, this position supports the QC/QA department and is responsible for quality control of production and products through process control inspection and testing of various product samples including clays and new products. This position may include other duties as needed to facilitate daily plant production or to gain additional knowledge for growth; and is responsible for supporting and demonstrating the Core Values of Integrity, Safety, Respect, Customer Focus, Quality, Innovation, and Financial Success. Performs other related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
• Develops and tests experimental mixes and slurries for new products. Determines and formats materials to be used for new colors. Determines equipment needed for new products.
• Collect clay mixes from Reclaimer and performs Baridex test for water-soluble sulfates to determine amount of barium carbonate necessary. Documents results accordingly.
• Checks each production line periodically (daily) to assure product meets correct specifications for color and size. Notifies machine operator when product does not meet specifications.
• Prepares paperwork and brick from failed 24-hour ABS. Performs a 5-hour boil of all failed 24-hour ABS for C/B ratio. Performs freeze thaw testing and documents all findings.
• Maintain quality control reports and other testing reports and issues reports to all departments involved in the brick making process.
• Issues new size data, additive, and mix changes.
• Maintains electronic recordkeeping and filing of QC/QA initiatives and QC scorecard data.
• Operates pug mill, clay grinding mill, clay mixer, tape, scales, clippers, hydrometer and electric lab kiln proficiently.
• Sets up test panels for management and sales reviews.
• Trains other laboratory QC / QA personnel.
• Communicates daily with QC/QA Coordinator, Manufacturing & Packaging Supervisors, Plant Superintendent, and Plant Manager regarding testing and new products.
• Complies with current 5S Housekeeping standards and requested protocol.
• Attends all safety meetings, required safety training, performs monthly housekeeping inspections and assists Safety Coordinator in collecting and documenting monthly safety and housekeeping reports, if necessary.
• Performs all other duties and responsibilities assigned from time to time by the company or its designated representative.
• Regular and Predictable attendance is required. Some overtime may be required on an intermittent basis.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
• High School Education or equivalent w/some college preferred.
• Suggested coursework in Mathematics and Chemistry
• Requires excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Requires one to three years of experience in a manufacturing laboratory environment.
• Attention to detail and ability to multi-task responsibilities.
• Must be able to receive and give direction equally & demonstrate patience with new employees.
• Must have a genuine compassion for co-workers & care how their environment affects them.
• Must be a self-starter and work effectively in a team-based environment.
• Must possess a valid Utah State Driver’s license and maintain a clean record.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
• Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing and entering data. Standing, walking, and sitting.
• Occasionally drive a company vehicle to deliver or pick up parts, reports, etc.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs. intermittently for handling machine parts or safety supplies
• Must be able wear a respirator and obtain Respirator Certification

THIS POSITION WILL TRAIN DURING AN AM SHIFT FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS. THE POSITION IS A PM SHIFT
