This position researches, develops, implements and monitors programs and divisional guidelines to control, reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses and deaths. Must be able to direct, advise and track multiple locations and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.  This position has responsibilities that extend to all Basalite locations and is responsible for supporting and demonstrating the Core Values of Integrity, Safety, Respect, Customer Focus, Quality, Innovation and Financial Success. Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Oversee (in a coach/advisor role) the activities of our Health and Safety Coordinators.
  • Inspect division locations, programs and documentation to identify and appraise conditions that may lead to increased injuries or citations.
  • Assist facilities in complying with divisional guidelines, safety, health and environmental regulations.
  • Analyze and evaluate regulatory agency requirements, new developments, their effect on the company and when applicable or necessary, the implementation process.
  • Develop accident-prevention programs, and integrate them into computer-aided process and tracking systems for subsidiary locations.
  • Audit existing locations and new acquisitions to evaluate the status of programs, level of hazardous conditions or equipment and current level of management participation. To assimilate, develop and project accumulated data into a course of action that will transform the acquisition into safe and healthy workplace. Provided detailed and accurate reports at the conclusion of the audits.
  • Provide accurate and detailed monthly reports about safety-related incidents occurring within the subsidiary.
  • Ensure that each location has the necessary regulatory agency required programs, that those programs are site specific, and are reviewed and revised as required.
  • Manage Workers' Compensation process, leveraging internal and external resources, to accomplish objectives for reducing injury risk, Company's Workers Compensation liability, and ensuring compliance with OSHA requirements for employee safety.
  • Stays competent with regulations and standards pertinent to the EHS profession by maintaining an annual professional development schedule. Included on the schedule would be participation in classes, seminars, webinars, and personal study materials (books, magazine, subscriptions, and email subscriptions).
  • Train location safety coordinators individually, by teleconference, and in large group settings on implementation of the Basalite IIPP and adoption of regulatory updates.
  • Abides by all safety rules set forth by company and governmental regulatory agencies and ensures that hazardous conditions are reported and corrected.
  • Regular attendance is required.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Requires bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Requires working knowledge of OSHA, MSHA and EPA regulations. CALOSHA, WSHA and related state regulatory agencies/regulations.
  • Must have and maintain valid driver’s license.
  • Requires excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication and mathematical skills.
  • Must be able to operate a PC and various office equipment/technology.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Ability to utilize various safety related software, databases or systems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel n  Reach with hands and arms, sit n  Talk and listen n  Stand and walk long distances on Plant sites, climb stairs and ladders and up onto elevated platforms and industrial machinery.
  • Occasionally required to bend at the waist n  Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Up to 50% travel time required.
  • Regular attendance is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Extensive travel by air and car is required to plant locations, where exposure to industrial noise, temperature extremes, chemicals and minerals (e.g. Portland cement, fly ash, sand & gravel, concrete admixtures, and so forth), moving machinery, forklift traffic, etc. is likely.
